Dear Nishant,
You have indeed touched on a very important issue, that is, to come up with realistic funding support when passing idealistic bills.
I have often made similar points in parliament, for example, supporting the education cess since it overcomes a fundamental hypocrisy (we had earlier made education free and compulsory for children upto the age of 14, but were providing only 1/3rd of the funds necessary to actually make that happen).

I will indeed take up the matter in Parliament.

With best wishes,
Baijayant Panda

Child Reporters in Indian Social Forum

We,Three child reporters each from Koraput and Dhenkanal two from Keonjhar, one from Bhubaneswar and four from West Bengal , had been to Delhi recently to participate in the Child Rights For World Social Forum(CR4WSF), which was a part of Indian Social Forum.
Our participation in the forum was to interact with children and child loving people , who had come there. While we were in the train to Delhi ,we met many people who loved children very much . We learnt many things from them .
Yes we met one girl in the train . She was sweeping the floor in the train. We talked to her . She told on how she was facing problems in her village after her parents had died. She had to discontinue her studies to feed herself . She was no more interested to get educated as she was more concerned about her income in the train. We shared the fruits with her . She was happy .
We went to Delhi and ISF. We talked to the children and adults and wrote what we observed and learnt .We stayed for three days and brought out three newsletters . We are thankful to each one who had talked to us , enquired on our activities in the villages .
We are thankful to CACL and UNICEF for taking us there and have such a nice experience . We are sharing our experience with our friends.

Letter from a friend Nishant for Everyone

Many many thanx for accepting me as your friend. I would be very happy to visit your place of work, to see you all, to walk hand in hand, to discuss and take up issues together, if you give me chance. Through me, you can also use the platform of The Statesman to make your voice heard in a wider level.

At present, I am concerned with a Career Fund for Child Workers, in the wake of lattest ban on child labour by the Government of India. Instead of going to schools, these poor friends of ours are working to escape from povert. To earn two square meals for themselves, some even for their entire family. I think, coming from a backward tribal district Koraput, you know this problem more than me.

If we stop them working, what's the alternative for them to earn food? What about their future? Hunger is the mother of all crimes. A hungry child denied work may become a beggar, a thief or an easy recruit for the crime network.

Future of a nation lies in the future of its children. It's high time the government should come out with a carreer plan for these rescued child workers. And if the government has not thought of it yet, we, the children, should come forward for our unfortunate friends in need. We should put up an united voice to make our policy-makers sit and take note.

I request you all to carry on a signature campaign for Child Workers' Career Fund and send it to the Prime Minister. If you want, I will be there with you at the end of the campaign.

You can also write me on any children's issue in your areas and whenever possible, I will try to publish it in The Statesman VOICES.

If we cannot be a sun to light up the whole world, let's atleast be small candles to fight the darkness sorrounding us.

With best wishes.

Nishant Nihar
Coordinator, The Statesman (Voices)

Dear Friends!

Dear Child ReporterI just happened to read your post about the liqour. It is good that sale of liqour is banned in your area, but you must spread awareness about the ill-efects of liqour among people your age, who are likely to take up the habit as young adults. You can do this is several ways. 1]Posters and notices written out by all your friends which could be put up on various walls.2]Put up street plays about the effects of liqour, how peer-pressure (pressure from people your own age) can be resisted.3]examine why young people in your area might be taking to liqour. in some places for example the reason is lack of other recreational activites (activities that are taken up after school etc). in which case you might want to talk to the elders in your locality about setting up youth centres. holding matches (cricket, football, gulli danda) between local teams, dance competitions etc.I am extremely impressed with this project. Best of luck for all your endeavours.

Lalla Uncle thank you.

child reporters said...
Lala uncle, thank you for the mail and the interest you have shown to know more about us . Very few people wish to know about children like us . But you have asked us . We are fortunate .We are the children from Koraput, Dhenkanal and will be from all the corners of Orissa and even from every part of our lovely country, India. We belong to the ruraland some of us come even from remote villages . Generally we donot have the basic facilities like electricity and a pucca house in many of our houses. Many of us walk kilometers to reach the school. We donot feel sad because we live in huts or even under a broken thatched roof as there are many children are also sleeping on the floor of some one else's house. We donot complain that we donot have good dresses to wear, as we see many of our friends in the village without a complete dress covering their body. Atleast we have some dress to wear. Some of us have sufficient food for our stomach . But we hear from some others that they donot have food many times . The mid-day meal is the most important event for them.We eat rice , ragi, Vegetables and dal in our meal .Our parents do a lot of work. Some of them work in the field as daily labor in someone's field or in our own field. Maximum donot have their own field .Going to the block headquarter is a dream for many of us . But after being a child reporter we have been to many villages in our block, we went to Koraput , our district head quarter many times to meet high level officers and others. Some of us had been to our state capital Bhubaneswar to attend a function of UNICEF, where we described the picture of our village to a good audience. We were being taken to Konark, Puri , Nandankanan during our visits . With the initiative of UNICEF we attended the Children's Science Congress held in Bhubaneswar last year. This was for the first time that child reporters reported the event in the daily bulletin published by the organisers . It was a great moment for us. We also had been to the SishuMela in Bhubaneswar as the child reporters and brought out a report on the day's events along with the views of the participating children. The most important event of Last year was the visit of Anupama Nayak and Sunita Gemel , the two child reporters to Beijing in China to attend the First International Children's Conference .We will give detailed reports on each of the events and experiences gadually , one by one . We are grateful to you that you have seen our blog. Yes, We can read and write English . But not much . We are trying to learn more and more to write directly to you and work on our own on the computer when we come to the block head quarter. We have a lot to say . please continue giving us the hope that you are there with us , wherever you stay , which ever work you do . Are you from England, America, Australia , NewDelhi or Africa ? Please tell the children near you to write to us . We wish if they too could be our friends .
With a lot of regards.
Your loving childreporters.

Joy Of Words

I am Manju Gemel from Maliput in Pottangi block.I read in stdVI. All my friends too introduced themselves and thus we all started speaking to each other . It was a nice experience to talk to strangers(who became my best friends later) . I had so much to learn from them . They were speaking about their school, village , friends , parents , neighbours and lot more. I too told them many things about my village, I like the most.

Joined hands together

We joined hands to begin our journey towards a new world. We came from different villages , belong to different caste, religion and financial status . But we had no such feelings and promised to move forward like the lamp raising its flame upward. It was the begining of a new hope -we too could do it.
And we were born.

The first letter

Hi!
We are the child reporters from Koraput in the state of Orissa in INDIA. We are hundreds of children who go to the school in our villages . Our region is perhaps the most beautiful place in the world . We have green mountains , waterfilled rivers, vibrant culture and tradition . Our region is inhabitated by a huge numbers of people from various tribal community . Despite of the rich natural and cultural heritage, we have many problems which needs to be addressed. inaccessibility is one of the main problems leading to many other problems like lack of education , health and other facilities in our region . We are living in areas where electricity is a distant dream for many people . A good house with good food and education , is not at reach for many of our friends . But things are changing for a betterone day by day . We are the fortunate ones in our district who could be brought into the beauty of education . More importantly we have also started acknowledging our problems and strengths in the most appropriate manner. Thanks to UNICEF, the district administration and Koraput Farmers' Association who had started the process of making us as Child Reporters since last year . We also have friends in Dhenkanal , another district in Orissa . We all observe our environment, our village , our day to day situations , trees, animals, fellow beings , their problems, solutions , our education , school , festivals , sanitation and hygene and a lot more while passing the day and while doing our work as we were doing before . In the evening We note down our observation in a diary . Then our writings get published in a magazine of our own ANKURODGAM from Koraput and KALIKA from Dhenkanal . We have interviewed many people who had visited our villages . Two girls amongst us had the opporunity to attend the first ever International Children's Conference at Beiging last October . We want to talk and communicate share our thoughts with the children and everyone world over on our observations and learn from theirs . It will be a fun and also provide us a forum to know each other . We could build a new world for us and the future , a better one to live with Harmony.May we begin the journey? Let's Get... Set... Go.
